The integration problem MCP addresses
Model Context Protocol describes a way for AI applications to communicate with external capabilities. In its architecture, a host coordinates clients that connect to servers. Servers can expose tools, resources, and prompts. This shared structure can reduce the need to design a completely different connection pattern for each compatible AI application.
A useful first business workflow
Consider a support assistant that retrieves an order status. Our suggested pilot would expose only the fields needed to answer the question, verify the customer identity through the existing application, and return a concise result. This is an illustrative workflow, not a claim about an existing CodeStack deployment. Begin with a read-only task before adding actions that change business records.
Keep authority in the application
An integration protocol is not an authorization policy. The underlying service should still verify the identity, account boundaries, and permissions for every request. Do not rely on the model to enforce which records someone may view. Keep credentials outside prompts, limit tool access to the task, and review what information is recorded in logs.
Design failures before the happy path
Decide what happens when a system is unavailable, a record is missing, or the assistant receives an ambiguous instruction. Avoid guessing an order number or treating missing data as a successful result. For consequential changes, design a review step that shows the exact action before execution. Make retries safe so the same request does not produce duplicate changes.
Decide whether MCP is the right fit
MCP is useful when compatible AI clients need a shared way to reach capabilities. A regular API or a deterministic automation may be simpler for a fixed workflow. Start with one measurable task, a small permission scope, and explicit acceptance criteria. Expand only after the pilot proves useful and your team can operate and support it reliably.
