The three metrics to understand

Largest Contentful Paint measures loading of the main visible content; Interaction to Next Paint measures responsiveness; Cumulative Layout Shift measures unexpected movement. Google’s good-experience thresholds are LCP at or below 2.5 seconds, INP at or below 200 milliseconds, and CLS at or below 0.1, assessed at the 75th percentile of visits.

Start with evidence from actual visits

Our suggested workflow is to separate laboratory diagnostics from real user measurements. A lab test helps reproduce problems under controlled conditions. Field data shows what visitors experience across devices and connections. If a new site has too little traffic for field reports, use lab checks as a starting point and collect real measurements as traffic grows.

Fix the largest visible delay first

Identify the main content element rather than compressing every file at random. Common investigations include server response time, an oversized hero image, render-blocking styles, and slow font delivery. Serve appropriately sized images and avoid lazy-loading the main above-the-fold image. Cache static files deliberately, and verify that your hosting configuration actually sends the intended headers.

Keep interactions responsive and layouts stable

Remove scripts that the page does not need. Split long tasks, avoid unnecessary third-party widgets, and test menus and forms on a slower mobile device. Reserve dimensions for images and embeds so arriving content does not push buttons away. Font changes and inserted notices also deserve attention because they can move text or controls after someone starts reading.

Measure the outcome, not just the score

Pick representative page types and repeat the same user journeys after a change. Record the conditions of each test so comparisons are meaningful. Combine performance measurements with form completion and user feedback. No single score guarantees search rankings or customer growth, but a faster and more predictable experience removes obstacles for people trying to use your site.
